A QUICK GUIDE

How to use this tool

Turn a roster into teams with clear membership and usable exports. Random assignment balances team sizes. If you provide numeric ratings, the second method tries to balance totals while keeping the same initial size limits. You can then make deliberate manual adjustments.

Enter one name per line or Name,Rating CSV, then choose team count, duplicate handling and assignment method.
Generate teams and review sizes or supplied rating totals. Move a participant with their team selector when needed.
Download the edited roster as CSV or text, or use the local print preview.

How this tool works

Random mode shuffles the roster and distributes entries across teams so sizes differ by at most one. Rating mode sorts by the supplied numbers, randomises equal-rating order and chooses the lowest available total among teams with remaining capacity. The tool does not infer ability or other personal characteristics from names. Repeated names can remain distinct, labelled with their original input entry, or be removed by an explicit matching rule.

Limits and assumptions

2–120 participants and 2–30 teams, with at least one initial participant per team. Optional ratings must be 0–100. Duplicate matching trims whitespace and ignores case only when explicitly selected. Rating balance uses a capacity-constrained greedy heuristic, not an optimal-grouping guarantee.

Useful to know

What if two different participants share a name?

Keep repeated names as distinct entries. The generated display label includes the original entry number, so you can tell them apart. Removing repeated names can remove a real person when names are shared.

Can I preserve an exact arrangement for later?

Download its roster or printable HTML. The page does not automatically keep participant data or restore previous random assignments after you leave.

Where are my files and inputs processed?

This tool processes your entries on your device. It does not upload them or save them in an account. Downloads remain on your device; Reset clears the current tool workspace.
