Colour Spaces & Display Calibration Guide

Coordinates and gamuts

A colour space defines coordinates, primaries, a white point and transfer functions. A gamut is its representable colour set. XYZ is a coordinate system, not a bounded RGB display gamut.

Reference whites and adaptation

D50 and D65 are standard reference illuminants. Chromatic adaptation transforms corresponding colours between reference whites; it is not a physical change to your monitor.

Transfer curves and depth

sRGB uses a piecewise transfer function, not a single gamma of 2.2. Display P3 uses that curve with different primaries. Adobe RGB, ProPhoto and Rec.2020 use their own definitions. FRC uses temporal dithering; browser colour-depth values do not prove native panel depth.

Calibration and ICC profiles

Calibration adjusts a device toward a target. Profiling characterises a measured device for colour-managed software. Reliable profiles require measurement data and suitable tools. This website provides visual assistance and numerical models, not automatic hardware calibration.
