Hash a local file with SHA-256 and compare an optional expected checksum without uploading the file.
Useful to know
What does a checksum match prove?
It shows that the calculated SHA-256 equals the expected digest you supplied. Its usefulness depends on trusting that expected digest. A match does not identify an author or scan the file for malware.
Why does hashing require HTTPS?
Web Crypto is available only in supported secure browser contexts. Open the HTTPS version of the tool. It does not fall back to uploading your file.
What is the example checksum?
The example file contains exactly the three ASCII/UTF-8 bytes abc, without a newline. Its SHA-256 is ba7816bf8f01cfea414140de5dae2223b00361a396177a9cb410ff61f20015ad.
Where are my files and inputs processed?
This tool processes your entries on your device. It does not upload them or save them in an account. Downloads remain on your device; Reset clears the current tool workspace.
